Bio

After graduating in Classical Archaeology at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) I became a licensed interpreter and translator from Italian to Dutch. In 1994 I moved to Rome. After a few years I started working as a freelance journalist. From 2002 till 2012 I was fulltime correspondent for NOS News (Dutch public radio and television), covering everything Italian from politics, culture, economics and organized crime to the Vatican. Having covered the Conclave of 2005 in 2013 I again did the live reports on the abdication of Benedict XVI and the Conclave that elected Pope Francis. Currently I work on a regular basis for VRT (Belgian public radio and television) and write for several Dutch magazines. I have also published two books in Dutch: a series of guided walks in Rome and a political, economical and sociological analysis of Italy under Prime Minister Mario Monti.

I am fluent in Dutch, English and Italian. I’m also a member of the Foreign Press Association in Rome and of the Italian Order of Journalists.
