This is a really unique event as Pilsner Urquell has the last permanent team of Coopers in the whole of Central Europe. Every year the pitching of the giant lager barrels is quite a spectacle. Peter Smith can supply all the video, interviews and images.

Many people would say that coopering is a dying profession – but at the Pilsner Urquell brewery in the Czech Republic it’s very much alive and kicking. Every year, the brewery’s team of coopers perform the dangerous job of spinning and rolling the giant wooden barrels in order to achieve a perfectly even pitch. It’s an energy sapping, highly skilled and very risky job – but one that helps to ensure that the beer produced today retains the same quality as Pilsen’s original 1842 batch.
