Midsummer brings countries to a halt
Sweden and Finland celebrate in various ways this weekend the longest day of the year. For many, thsi is teh most important celebration of the year, followed by Christmas.
This week Stockholm is busy preparing the wedding of the Crown
Princess of Sweden and the gym owner and prince to be Daniel Westling. The wedding is set for 19th of June, Saturday, with ceremonies taking place the whole day , both in private and in public, with royal guests from around the world, and very fine dressing and dining. While the media reports on every details, the event is more than glamour- is also the opportunity of marketing Sweden and bring wedding-related income to businesses- from design to souvenirs and hi-tech. It also raises the question of the role of royalty in modern Sweden and the timing of alocating 0.8 million euros for the wedding while people are laid off and companies closing. |
