GRN: I was fast asleep when my cell phone rang at 1 am in my clean but basic hotel in Damascus. “Hello,” I said, not giving my name. The caller spoke in Arabic. Again, I said hello and this time he replied in fluent English, “Oh! I’m so sorry”, and put the phone down.
